Easy Natural Mouthwash Recipe

Let's face it, there's nothing worse than bad breath. Whether it's morning breath, coffee breath, or garlic breath, you don't want to be the person making your friends and colleagues cringe all day long.

Bad breath can be embarrassing, and there are many reasons you might be experiencing it. It can stem from what you eat and drink, smoking, certain medications, having a cold, gum issues, and various medical conditions. However, the most common cause, according to the National Health Service, is simple poor oral hygiene.

"Bacteria that build up on your teeth – particularly between them – as well as on your tongue and gums, can produce unpleasant-smelling gases. These bacteria are also responsible for gum disease and tooth decay. Any food trapped between your teeth will be broken down by the bacteria and may be responsible for bad breath."

So, the easiest way to combat bad breath is to practise good oral hygiene. Sounds easy, right?

There's one problem, though. Many mouthwashes and toothpastes contain ingredients that can be harmful to your health and the environment. For instance, many common mouthwashes contain large amounts of alcohol, which can dry out your mouth and cause bad breath. Chlorhexidine, another ingredient often used in mouthwash, can alter your taste buds and is not recommended for long-term use.

If you're an avid mouthwash user but don't like the sound of those ingredients, don't worry! We've created a mouthwash recipe that's sure to keep your mouth clean and your breath fresh without any of the harmful stuff.

Easy DIY Mouthwash

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp Perfect Press® Coriander Oil
  • 32 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 16 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 3 tbsp baking soda (optional)

You will also need:

  • Measuring spoons (teaspoon & tablespoon)
  • A 1-pint mason jar

Instructions:

  1. Put the distilled water, essential oils, and coriander oil into your jar. Screw on the lid and give it a good shake.
  2. Add baking soda, if using it.
  3. Put the lid back on and shake it again.
  4. Use about a tablespoon and a half to rinse after brushing. Swish for about a minute. Don’t forget to spit!
  5. Keep the lid tightly screwed on the jar between uses. Shake before each use.

Note: It’s very important that you swish and spit because of the essential oils in this recipe. Mouthwash should never be swallowed, even if it’s natural.

Benefits of These Ingredients

Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil has powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties. It kills bad bacteria that can cause problems in your mouth. Natural Living Ideas cites studies showing that a range of oral bacteria responsible for tooth decay is susceptible to tea tree oil even at low dilution. It is especially effective for those prone to fungal or bacterial oral infections.

Peppermint Oil: Peppermint oil also has antimicrobial properties and can freshen bad breath. Plus, it adds a minty flavour, which many of us associate with a clean mouth. According to Body Unburdened, peppermint essential oil is extremely effective at killing anaerobic bacteria that thrive in the low oxygen environment of the mouth and can cause gum disease.

Baking Soda: Baking soda helps combat bad breath and neutralise acids in your mouth. According to Livestrong, it can also help break the bonds of stain molecules on your teeth, making stains appear less noticeable.

Distilled Water: BreathMD tells us that tap water can contain chlorine, mercury, fluoride, nitrates, and even some carcinogens. Using the purest water possible is a good idea when making your own mouth rinse. If you have an osmosis filter on your tap, you can use tap water, but otherwise, stick with distilled water.

Perfect Press® Coriander Oil: Cold-pressed coriander seed oil is a great long-term solution for getting rid of bad breath and can even prevent canker sores. It supports a healthy mouth, a balanced belly, and more. Perfect Press® Coriander Oil is Perfectly Pressed from the best coriander seeds in the world.

With this simple and natural mouthwash recipe, you can maintain good oral hygiene without the harmful ingredients found in many commercial products. Enjoy fresh breath and a healthy mouth every day!
